Yep, Stephen Harper is off to China to promote "trade" . What will he be trading? Not beads or beaver pelts, you can be sure....... more likely black sticky stuff from his friends in Northern Alberta.
Mr. Harper's government tells us that this exporting of our natural resources is "in the national interest". But is that really so? Economists point out that exporting oil to Asia will decrease the domestic supply, and since oil prices are demand / supply driven, this can be expected to result in higher prices here at home.
It's ironic to observe that China has billions invested in the tar sands projects....... and thus stands to make a fortune selling oil that belongs to the people of Canada to Chinese industry....... while being indirectly subsidized by the inflated prices Canadians will pay at the pump as a result of Mr. Harper's policies.
Which part of the "national interest" is being served here? The stock answer, of course, is "jobs"....... which is completely true....... so long as one overlooks global warming, climate change, environmental degradation, and billions in profits reaped by Mr. Harper's corporate friends.
And what will our future generations do for energy after all of our resources have been shipped off to Asia?
Yep, Mr. Harper is off to China to promote "trade"....... problem is that he's trading away our future, and you and I are only beginning to pay the price for his short-sighted policies.
But it's not all bad news........ you'll still be able to get six pairs of tube socks for only $5.99.
